Airport to get anti-hijack committee

KOLHAPUR: The Kolhapur district collector, along with superintendent of police, have decided to jointly designate a team and plan for setting up anti-hijack machinery at the Kolhapur airport.

Though the airport is not currently operational, the meeting and appointment of police officials was mandatory for security reasons. The airport has an average of 35 planes using its infrastructure every month. However, there are no scheduled flights to and from Kolhapur. There has been a pending demand from industries, educational institutes and the tourism sector for introducing a scheduled flight service.

District collector Amit Saini said, "A police inspector is already looking after airport security. However, there is special training for such security personnel and we are finalising names of senior officials to take up these responsibilities. This is being done to keep a close watch on the airport, provide security and prohibit any illegal entry to the airport. The training is elaborate and once we finalise names, we will send the police officials for training."
