Bomb cry on aircraft triggers panic at IGI

NEW DELHI: There was panic at IGI Airport on Thursday when a passenger aboard a Manila-bound Cebu Pacific flight, diverted to Delhi following a mid-air medical emergency, raised an alarm regarding presence of a bomb on the plane. With the capital on high alert due to Yakub Memon's hanging and the approaching Independence Day, intelligence and security agencies got into a tizzy and were kept on their toes for hours.

Flight 5J-7945, an A330-300 carrying 430 passengers, underwent a detailed examination by security officials. It was delayed by over 12 hours. Officials said that a 21-year-old woman passenger, who belongs to Philippines, identified as Russell Gen, reported uneasiness. The flight contacted the nearest air traffic controller to seek immediate landing permission. Permission was granted by Indira Gandhi International Airport and the flight touched down around 4.15am.

"The women was offloaded and medical staff waiting at the airport took her to hospital where she underwent check-up for 2-3 hours. Once she was made comfortable, she was taken back to the flight and arrangements for the plane to continue its disrupted journey were made. All of a sudden, the woman started shouting that there's a bomb in the toilet of the aircraft. This triggered panic on board the flight as well as in the airport," a source said.
