Civil Aviation: Govt proposes rescue board

The government proposes to set up a search and rescue board in the civil aviation sector in the country. On Monday, the civil aviation ministry told Parliam-ent, “The objective of the National Aeronautical Sea-rch and Rescue Services is to search for a missing aircraft, its crew and passengers and to provide aid and organise the rescue of survivors of aircraft accidents. With this objective, the draft National Aeronautical Search and Rescue Coordination Committee, making it responsible for Aeronautical Search and Rescue Services in the Indian Search and Rescue Region over land area for handling aeronautical exigencies.” The ministry further said, “No timeline has been fixed for this purpose as it involves wide range of consultations with various participating agencies. Presently, in case of exigencies, the Rescue Coordinati-on Centres (RCC) of Airpo-rts Authority of India coordinates with concerned agencies, including the Army, Air Force etc.”
The move assumes significance, given last year’s occurrence when aMalaysia airlines flight went missing.
