Cops' unholy nexus at airport in sharp focus

Kochi: The arrest of civil police officer Jibin K Basheer in the Muvattupuzha gold smuggling case has again highlighted the nexus between smugglers and officers from Kerala police on deputation in the immigration wing of Cochin international airport.

The bureau of immigration (BOI), which handles the immigration section, is hiring officers from Kerala police on one-year deputation and the quick buck earned through aiding smugglers is what lures cops to the deputation. Jibin is the third officer of Kerala police arrested for aiding smugglers in CIAL this year.

A top official with the Immigration section said shortage of staff with the bureau of immigration was forcing it to hire men from state police. He said the section had staff less than the sanctioned strength now. Of around 230 personnel with the section, nearly 130 are on deputation from state police.
