DGCA removes Air India flight safety chief

New Delhi: The Directorate-General of Civil Aviation has removed Captain AS Soman, Director, Flight Operations in Air India, from his position. This follows the DGCA expressing dissatisfaction at the manner in which the flight safety department, which Soman heads, conducted itself during an investigation into an incident relating to hard landing of an Air India aircraft while on a flight between Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

The DGCA action relates to a June 28 incident on an Air India flight in which data from the flight was not retrieved despite the aircraft being involved in a bad landing. DGCA guidelines stipulate 100 per cent monitoring of all flight data.

Commonly referred to as Flight Operations Quality Assurance in aviation circles, the exploitation of flight data is used to enhance flight safety. An analysis of flight data allows safety managers to identify trends and fully investigate the circumstances behind minor incidents so that operational procedures and training can be improved, along with raising awareness about safety issues within the airline.
