Farmer attempts suicide over Bhogapuram airport

Visakhapatnam: Tension prevailed after a farmer attempted suicide by dousing himself with kerosene in front of the Bhogapuram tehsildar's office in Vizianagaram district to voice his protest against the plans of the state government to set up a greenfield international airport in the area.

The farmer, identified as 35-year-old V Ramu from Appannapeta village, allegedly poured kerosene on his head and tried to immolate himself, but other protestors snatched the match box from his hand averting a disaster.
According to sources, more than 300 farmers having small parcels of land gathered in front of the tehsildar's office and staged a protest demanding that the state government withdraw its proposal to set up a greenfield airport in the area. The farmers said that the plan to set up the international airport would cause irrevocable damage to their lives and also affect the livelihood of people dependent on farming in the area.
