Karipur airport works to be expedited

KOZHIKODE: Works to strengthen runway at the Karipur airport will begin in the second week of September and would conclude within 18 months, said MPs E Ahamed and E T Muhammad Basheer.

Briefing reporters after the advisory committee meeting of the airport, Ahamed, who is the chairman of the committee, said the strengthening of the runway would expedite the development works at the airport.

He allayed the apprehension raised from various quarters that partial closure would spell doom for the airport in the long run. Ahamed assured that he would meet the Union minister for civil aviation to discus the further development of the airport.

The meeting examined both the long-term and short-term problems faced by the airport and felt that many of the issues are basically technical in nature.

What is to be done at the airport is not just re-carpeting by restructuring. The work is expected to be completed in 18months after the commencement of which is expected to begin in the second week of September. To ensure that work is progressing as per the plan, the work schedule will be published on line and the progress will be monitored regularly, Ahamed said. He discounted the allegation that there is a concerted move to dwindle the importance of the Karipur airport with the intention of promoting the upcoming Kannur airport. Kerala is developing rapidly and the presence of one airport will not affect the prospects of the other, Ahamed said. As a temporary measure, the meeting decided to write letter to airline companies to operate small aircrafts from Karipur. Some airline companies have stopped the operation of wide-bodied aircrafts from Kariour prior to the maintenance work at the airport.
