Chennai: Flying to Port Blair has become safer as Airports Authority of India has started to use modern surveillance to track planes flying over Bay of Bengal which is not covered under radar.
Air traffic controllers can now see on their monitors aircraft flying in a 250miles radius of Port Blair over the sea as ADS-B (Automated Dependence Surveillance - Broadcast) surveillance has been introduced at the airport. A ground station for ADS-B has been installed at Port Blair. Data from the ground station will provide surveillance coverage over Bay of Bengal till the Chennai-Kuala Lumpur FIR boundary. It will soon be integrated to Kolkata and other airports.
The new system uses a combination of satellites, other aircraft and a ground station at Port Blair to automatically send out location, speed, altitude and other details about an aircraft to ATCs in Chennai.
