Odisha’s lone ‘international’ airport only a feeder airport!

Bhubaneswar: Air India’s flight schedule has nailed the fallacious claim by the Union Civil Aviation ministry that international flight operations would be launched from the Biju Patnaik International airport in the Odisha capital from July 10 ahead of the Nabakalebara festival.
A Civil Aviation ministry release, issued in the last week of June, had said that international flight operations would set off from Bhubaneswar to Dubai via Hyderabad before July 10. It was apparently done to facilitate tourist inflow during the Nabakalebara festival in Puri which is expected to draw a crowd of over 50 lakh pilgrims to the holy town.
However, to everyone’s surprise, it has now emerged that international flights will not touch down on the Biju Patnaik International Airport here as the flights will be operating on the hub and spoke model. As per the model, the carriers will be taking the passengers to international hubs from the feeder airport. In short, Air India will only be ferrying international passengers to and from New Delhi.
The draft aviation policy envisages six metro airports—New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Hyderabad– to act as airline hubs.
