Sr citizen accuses AI of damaging her costly wheelchair

Pune: While the attentions of Air India have been known to be rather prompt for VIPs and political leaders, it appears the airline has been rather negligent in the case of some common commuters. Only days ago, controversy reared its head when Air India Flight 191 was delayed by an hour because Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's principal secretary, Pravinsinh Pardeshi, realised he had forgotten his passport containing a valid US visa at home. As a result, over 250 passengers got to cool their heels in the flight till the itinerant document was retrieved.

Now, a physically challenged woman from the city has emphasised the claim of the airline's nonchalance, accusing it of negligence in transporting her specially designed wheelchair, which was damaged during a flight two months ago, leaving her helpless while her son runs from pillar to post for compensation in vain.

Razia Malik was travelling from Chicago to Pune via Delhi Flight AI-126 on March 29 this year, with her son Tausif Malik, when the incident occurred. Razia had undergone a spinal cord surgery in the US, and was flying back with the recliner wheelchair worth close to Rs 50,000 or USD 1,000. But when the two touched down in Pune, the wheelchair was badly damaged.
