Kochi: Riding on the back of its stated objective to become power neutral by 2016, at least two of the eight small hydroelectric power stations to be set up by CIAL Infrastructure — a subsidiary of the Cochin International Airport Limited — are set to become operational by May next year.
Land acquisition for the two projects, coming up at Kakkadam Poyil (21 MW) and Kokkamkallu (2MW) in Kozhikode district, are already under way. “The agency is now working on a schedule to generate power from these two projects alongside the launch of the upcoming international terminal at CIAL, expected in May 2016,” official sources said.
With the opening of the new international terminal, the daily power requirement of CIAL is expected to go up to 1.1 lakh units from the present 50,000 units. The power to be generated from these projects will be fed to the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) power grid.
