When smugglers choose immigration officers

When smugglers talk about 'setting,' they mean sneaking out gold or any other contraband with the tacit understanding of the officials at the airport. Such a 'setting' had been arranged at the Karippur airport on the day CRPF personnel battled the airport staff. The flight with the carrier was diverted to Kochi when Kozhikode airport became a war-zone. The man who was carrying two kilos of gold was held by the customs officials in Kochi.

The Cochin International Airport had its own 'setting' experts. Jabin K. Bashir, the civil police officer arrested for his involvement in a smuggling racquet, was an ordinary young man at Muvattupuzha even two years ago. His friends had to collect money among themselves to help him treat his father, a ration shop owner.
