1kg gold found in toilet of Dubai-B’luru flight

Panaji: The Goa commissionerate of customs seized 1kg of gold that was being smuggled onboard Air India flight 994 into the country at Goa international airport, Dabolim, early on Monday. The haul, worth nearly 23 lakh, was made during a routine inspection by customs officials and airline security staff.

"The gold was hidden in the toilet but when we questioned the passengers and the airline staff, nobody claimed it," assistant commissioner Sekhar Jain said. "We learn new ways in which gold is smuggled with each inspection."

The 10 bars of gold, each weighing 100g, were wrapped in black adhesive tape and attached to the wall behind the toilet paper dispenser, customs officials said.

The Air India flight arrived from Dubai and after a brief stopover at Goa was scheduled to fly to Bengaluru. A routine check by customs officials and airline security staff led to the discovery of the smuggled gold.
