Mumbai: Two years ago, the Mumbai International Airport authorities identified a minaret of a mosque near the Milan Subway as a 'hazard' to the flight operations, saying it protrudes onto the glide path of the international airport as well as the Juhu airport. Even as the authorities passed the buck as to who should address the matter, the minaret has grown taller, after the mosque authorities installed a spire atop a few weeks ago.
The minaret now stands at least 37 mt tall - it was already 7.6 mt higher than the prescribed limit of 26.12 mt in 2013 - and the airport sources said that the mosque authorities never had a no-objection certificate from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to construct it in the first place.
"A couple of years ago, the minaret was found to be 33.7 mt in height when it was measured by the Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) officials. The MIAL had submitted a complaint with the aviation regulator (DGCA). A few weeks ago, we spotted a spire which appears to be about 3 mt in height. This would take the minaret's height to about 37 mt," an airport official said.
The official said that the minaret posed an obstacle to runway 09 of the international airport and runway 34 of the Juhu airport. The DGCA officials were not available for comment but the airport sources said that the DGCA has asked the concerned airports to deal with the matter.
