Airport drain on coffers: Rs 1350cr

New Delhi: Air India is not the only drain on the government's resources. More than 100 airports, including those in most of the state capitals, ran up a combined loss of Rs 1,350 crore during 2013-14, a government report says.

Just eight airports earned profits, says the document, tabled by the civil aviation ministry in Parliament this week at a time the Centre has been mulling airport privatisation. ( See chart)

Some 101 airports managed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) have consistently made losses over the past four years. Of these, 78 are civilian airports.

Government sources attributed the losses to low air traffic and the operational costs of meeting the norms regulating staff strength, security equipment and the like at all airports, irrespective of the volume of passenger traffic through them.

Ministry officials blamed the low air passenger traffic on poor airport management by the AAI and inadequacies in the civil aviation policy.
