Coimbatore: The textile city might soon be home to an air ambulance. Ganga Hospitals plan to acquire an air ambulance for easy transport of patients in critical condition from across the country to the hospital. The hospital has signed an agreement with OSS Air Management to procure a helicopter to be operated as an air ambulance. OSS launched India's first air ambulance in 2011 to serve Formula One's requirements.
The air ambulance, technically called a helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS), will have all the facilities available in an intensive care unit (ICU). "This will have a ventilator, oxygen cylinders and masks, defibrillators and a health care person," said Ganga Hospital's chairman of the plastic surgery, hand and microsurgery department, Dr S Raja Sabapathy.
The textile town has some of the best hospitals in the country and is poised to grow as a global medical tourism hub. The proposed air ambulance would give a big fillip to the health sector here.
