Indira Gandhi International Airport faces security concern over uncleared cargo

New Delhi: A major security concern looms over Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, with a huge quantity of goods lying unattended at the cargo terminal pending clearance from the Customs department. A majority of these goods comprises Eid gifts coming from the Gulf countries, but the Customs department has been unable to clear the stock.
According to sources, the consignments came four to five weeks back and about 15 days back nearly 700 tonnes of goods were lying in open without proper care. Now the Customs department is claiming that half of these goods have been cleared but it will take almost two to three weeks to clear the entire lot. These goods are also attracting thieves and it is posing a huge security risk as they are lying very close to the runway. According to sources, aircrafts can get damaged as the planes are being parked close to these goods.

According to a senior Customs official, they wanted to scan every item coming from the West Asian countries to clamp down on smuggling. Recently, the customs department decided to check every gift couriered as clearing agents in connivance with few Customs staffers are clearing gift couriers by hiding its actual cost.
