Junior Veerappan's smuggler son held at Mumbai airport

Mumbai: After several years of unsuccessful attempts, the Mumbai police on Friday nabbed the son of notorious sandalwood smuggler Shahul Hamid at Mumbai Airport as he was clearing immigration before boarding a flight to the middle-east. Hamid is known in smuggling circles as 'Junior Veerappan'.

Sources in Mumbai Airport's immigration department said Aseem Shahul Hamid, 35, was about to board an Emirates flight to Dubai. "Early on Friday, a person was trying to board an Emirates flight to Dubai, During the screening process, it appeared that a Look Out Circular was pending against his name."

The source added, "A database search showed the person in question is Aseem Shahul Hamid, son of a sandalwood smuggler."

The LOC was issued by Andhra Pradesh's Tirumala district police after a case of attempt to murder of a government servant was registered against Aseem. "He said during preliminary questioning that he had come from Chennai to Mumbai to meet a sandalwood smuggler to discuss an ongoing deal," sources said, adding it was Aseem's fourth or fifth trip to India from Dubai and Singapore, in spite of the LOC against him.
