Soon, visa-on-arrival at Calicut airport

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs is planning to extend the tourist-visa-on-arrival facility for the Calicut International Airport.

The e-tourist visa facility, enabled by Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA), is now available at nine destinations in the country including Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi airports. The new proposal is expected to give a fillip to the sagging tourism industry in north Kerala.

Highly-placed sources told The Hindu that the e-tourist visa facility would be worked out with the Bureau of Immigration, Foreigners Regional Registration Office along with the Tourism Ministry officials and the Airports Authority of India. “A team from New Delhi is reaching here on August 6 to discuss the proposal,” the sources said.

The average number of foreign arrivals per year at the Calicut International Airport is between 45,000 and 50,000 passengers. As many as 13 lakh Indians also fly down at the airport a year. The major traffic volume is experienced during April and May as well as the Haj season.
