Unexpected night rain delays flights, passengers and schedules affected

CHENNAI: Flying to the city has become unreliable by evening flights. Unexpected night rain has been causing delays as the MeT department is not able to accurately predict and spread information about the weather situation to airlines and airports efficiently. Airlines have raised the issue with the Airports Authority of India several times.

More than five flights suffered delays between 7pm and midnight on Friday. At least one or two flights were delayed every day in the last three days due to inclement weather. And it was a tough time for travellers and airline officials as passengers and schedules were affected.

"Schedules elsewhere were affected because planes arrived at Chennai late. Ground handling work like loading and unloading of baggage and readying a plane were also hit because many planes are parked in the remote bay which is away from the passenger terminals," said an airport official.

Sources said though pilots receive updates from MeT department, a change in weather that brings in heavy rainfall in a short span of time is affecting airline operations. This has made it very difficult for airline staff who manage operations.
