Chennai: Security personnel at the Chennai airport on Thursday seized 200 star tortoises while they were being smuggled to Kuala Lumpur. Two people were detained for interrogation in this connection.
Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (Southern Region) officials, who are investigating the case, said two carriers -- Ziaudeen (48) and Ashraf Ali (23) -- came to the airport to board flights to Kuala Lumpur. One of them was to board a flight in the morning and the other one was to board flight at night.
The final destination of the tortoises was Jakarta in Indonesia, officials said.
The consignment was handed over to Ziaudeen and he brought Ali to accompany him to Kuala Lumpur. For this the smugglers assured them Rs 15,000.
