IAF builds wall to keep encroachments at bay

Pune: In order to demarcate the area required for the proposed runway extension of the Pune International Airport in Lohegaon which doubles as a defence airbase, IAF authorities are constructing a compound wall to secure the area from possible encroachment. Senior IAF officers were interacting with reporters Thursday during an ‘Open Day’ at the airbase ahead of the ‘Air Force Day’ on October 8.
The Pune International Airport is part of the defence airfield, which is controlled by the IAF. The airfield serves as a base for Sukhoi-30 MKI fighters. The air force station controls the runway and the Air Traffic Control (ATC).
The existing length of the runway is 8,300 ft and the proposed extension is expected to add 2,200 ft to it, making it adequate for operations of bigger aircraft.
