Liver for transplant braves insensitive airport, airline staff to save life

Visakhapatnam: The hope for a new life for 56-year-old acute liver cirrhosis patient from Ahmedabad, Supriya Patil (name changed), would have been snuffed out even before her liver transplant in Hyderabad today had it not been for Member of Parliament from Visakhapatnam, K Hari Babu.

The liver was one of the organs retrieved from a 52-year-old female road accident victim from Srikakulam, who was declared brain dead at Manipal Hospital, Vizag, on Thursday evening. A medical team from Yashoda Hospital, Hyderabad, was dispatched to collect the liver for harvesting on another female patient, who had been waiting for months for a liver transplant.

"While arriving at Vizag from Hyderabad, our team had faced problems at Shamshabad airport for carrying the medical equipment and chemicals needed for harvesting organs. On the return, we were stopped at Vizag airport as the airlines concerned said that travelling with human organs was against the rules. Though we pleaded with them we were not permitted. Finally, we called up Vizag MP Hari Babu around 11.15 am, who immediately responded and sought clearance from the airlines for the medical team to travel with the organ," said P Ashoka Varma, senior general manager, corporate communications, Yashoda Hospital, adding that rules should be made flexible for such medical emergency and Jeevandan cases.
