Political parties demand extension of Kannur airport runway to 4,000 meters

Kannur: While the Kannur International Airport Limited (KIAL) authorities are slowly overcoming hurdles to extend the runway length to 3,400 metres, various political parties have started raising demands that it should be extended to 4,000 metres to meet international standards.

According to the BJP district committee, there was a plan to conduct a survey for a runway length of 3,950-4,000 metres in the initial stage, but some vested interests, including the Kochi lobby, apparently intervened and the runway length was reduced.

"In the present situation, the Kannur airport could be developed to international standards, for which the runway should be 4,000 metres," said BJP district president K Ranjith. "We will bring this to the attention of the Union civil aviation minister and also a memorandum would be given to chief minister Oommen Chandy," he said.
