The Killer Chopper

After a brief lull the “killer copter” is back making the headlines again. Northeast has seen a series of crashes involving the Pawan Hans Helicopter Limited (PHHL). The recent crash in Arunachal Pradesh killing Tirap Deputy Commissioner Kamlesh Kumar Joshi, not only made the mass deem it as a ‘killer chopper’ but also raised pertinent questions on why such services have not been terminated yet.

The Pawan Hans, a helicopter service company based in New Delhi, has a history of fatal accidents attached to its name. As a result, just like the cases of the erstwhile MiGs of the Indian Air Force, Pawan Hans, a public sector company, has transformed into some sort of ‘Flying Coffin’ with people becoming very reluctant to use its services. Besides providing helicopter services to ONGC to its off-shore locations among its wide array of services, Pawan Hans also offers ferry services to the remote corners of the Northeast.
