In its first move towards the privatisation of the nation’s 22 airports, the Federal Government, through the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), has leased the operation and management of Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to a consortium of investors known as Abuja Gateway Consortium (AGC).
The core investor, which offered N12.73 billion for the facility, will manage the airport for a 25-year period after which the ownership of the airport will revert to the Federal Government. Members of the consortium are Airport Consulting, Vienna, Austria; Gitto Construzioni Generali Nigeria Limited, an Italian company based in Abuja; Nairanet Technologies Limited, Airline Services Limited and A.G. Ferrero and Company Limited.
The Airports Authority of India, which currently manages 124 airports in the world, is the airport operator and technical partner in the consortium. The three initial investors short-listed for the bidding processes include Airport Company of South Africa (ACSA), Airport Consortium of Vienna, which is the lead company of Nigeria International Airport Partners and Nairanet Consortium.
Under the new arrangement, the management of the airport will, in the next three months, change hands from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) to the AGC. The new owners will, however, pay $10 million to the Federal Government before they finally take over the airport.
